Where To Train In Phuket?

Hey guys this is my first post on MuayThailand :)

I've been training muay Thai for the last 2 years and have had 4 amateur fights, next year I plan to go over to Thailand for a few months to better my skills and fitness and come back with plans for some title fights...

I wanted to know what gyms you guys recommend in Phuket (It doesn't 100% have to be Phuket but I was kinda wanting to stay there), I'm on a budget of about $3000 AUD for the trip with plans to JUST spend my time training.

I want to find a gym that will push me and focuses on technique , plus has good facilities and trainers that I can do privates with . A good trainer to student ratio is important, as well as a gym that's not to commercial or westernised . I'm not going to waste my time with TMT or anything

Cheers Ben

I'll assume a few months to be about 2 months. Possibly Sumalee Boxing Gym?

- It's in Phuket
- It's located away from the south and west side of Phuket so you're away from touristy/westernised stuff although it's not isolated.
- The trainers push you and focus on technique
- Has a pool and a weight room (power rack and bench press)
- You can do privates
- The trainer to student ratio is really good. It's one of the things that the owners ensure. I've never felt that it was crowded on my two trips there.
- The sponsored fighters there are also very nice guys. Jordan is fighting at Lumpinee tonight, Craig fought lumpinee recently and will be on Thai Fight again

The only thing is your 3k budget but I'll leave that part up to you :)

Why phuket if you want an authentic gym?

Hawkman
Elite on the east side near the zoo is a good gym, but mainly Brazilians there.
which is nice if you like your vaginas bald.

Don't we all?

Vlad
I wanna go to tiger - I dont wanna go to tiger

Well then go to Dragon

Where would you recommend to find a gym like that tony?

rainey
singpatong

mylittletony
When I think of authentic gyms, I think of places like Burklerk, Kiatmoo9, kaewsamrit. Although Sumalee seems nice.

do these camps have what I'm looking for?

BenFMT_NTG
Rainey, I was thinking of going to Singpatong as a friend had been there previously, are they really strict on technique? that would be a bonus

rainey
they are strict on everything.

if you want real authentic then phuket then singpatong is the only gym. the rest are everything you said you didnt want.

mylittletony
@ Bumwau, what do you think about the budget?

rainey
its tight, 78,000baht wont go very far. I couldnt do two months on that. some prob could though

Rambutan
If you go to he North of Thailand you can stay longer on that budget, maybe you can look at the Chiang Mai gyms? or an Issaan gym?
for the type of gym you want I would follow Tony's advice, dont go to Phuket .
The problem is that many of the good gyms are in BKK and expensive.

mylittletony
If you really want to go to the south, maybe you could go to a smaller island, like ko pangan or Ko yao noi.. I've never been there myself, but there are a lot of gyms there.

BenFMT_NTG
Cheers guys I think I might check out singpatong a little more, as it sounds like it has what I'm looking for... so I'll talk to my friend but much appreciated!

bumwau
@mylittletony - in terms of budget, it's expensive no matter where you are in phuket and unless TS is willing to live in a cheapo Thai accomodation and eating minimally, I think 3k for 2 months wont be enough if he wants to also do privates. Might get a discount if he fights but ive never done that so don't know. Relatively decent accomodation is the hard part.

@BenFMT_NTG Singaptong would be the other gym i'd go to but never been there. Has a good rep and my own Thai trainer recommends it (he use to work there) but it's the location that pretty much made me choose sumalee the first time round. I'd train once a day in the afternoon then walk to bangla road and party haha. Mike '300' trains/trained at Singpatong for quite some time

BenFMT_NTG
@bumwau okay awesome, and by the sounds of things I might have to increase the budget a bit, but that's okay :)

bumwau
Awesome! Goodluck man.

If you go to singpatong then hope you won't get tempted the fun stuff nearby

If you go to sumalee, you'll be safe from that temptation and still have a good time training.

But ultimately your preference :D

Badman22
sinbi over sumalee ....train with bee,ant or pot . ull learn heaps bro

minr
Singpatong, sitsongpeenong Phuket, sinbi, sumalee, Rawai Supa when it is empty.

Hawkman recommended me a guy named kongbeng from Rawai Supa for a private, best advise I was given he changed almost everything in my game and corrected me and showed me easier ways to do things and he went to war with Damien Alamos couple of years ago.

minr
I agree with you Badman, I did shadowboxing with Pot you could tell he was a really good trainer he didn't do pads in group sessions though.
